Monday: At the Shrine

Andrew did not have to work today because it is still a national holiday weekend, so we all went to a Shrine in Asan that honors a Korean Admiral who led his people to defeat the invading Japanese back in the 1500's. The Shrine is built within a beautifully landscaped historical site that also includes burial mounds of many of his honored descendants. We walked along the pathways, admired the architecture, and learned a little about the history along the way.

Ken and Andrew try their hand at rolling hoops. Grandpa was definitely the champ.

Of course we had to feed thousands of fish (carp) in the ponds beneath the bridge.

Yep, Thousands.

Sophie poses with us near the fish pond.

It's hot, we're tired, let's buy a drink. How about aloe vera juice? With lumps. Yum! (Really, it wasn't bad, once you get used to swallowing a drink with gel-like floaties throughout it.)

The walk up to the main Shrine for Admiral Yi was long and steep, but Elanor was game to climb up there with us. I was very impressed with the respect that Korean visitors showed for the Admiral as they pondered his sacrifices for their country. Each person bowed to his memory before leaving the main building of his shrine.

After our explorations, Andrew treated us all to a meal in a small eatery just outside the grounds of the monument. We had a delightful assortment of Korean foods, and Ken and I ate pork cutlets along with everyone else. Yes, I know you're shocked. When in Korea....we will eat as the Koreans do. :)

Outside of the restaurant there are these little "rides" that the girls got to enjoy. Yep, just like in the malls at home. Notice the delighted smiles of the two teenage girls nearby. Koreans LOVE children, and blond ones are such a novelty!

After a little down time at home, we went with Michelle to a "bounce house" to let the kids play. (Sorry, I didn't bring my camera!) It is essentially a tent with 7 large, rectangular trampolines joined together upon which children can bounce, bounce, bounce with their friends! (For only 1000 won per half hour). The girls had a great time. It's been a good day. :)
