Our friends Mark and Kathy have adopted a new daughter! Maleena has been living with the family off and on over the last several years, and yesterday we were invited to the Juvenile Court to witness the signing of the adoption papers. Ken and I were very impressed with the Judge, who was homey, down-to-earth and yet asked searching questions that needed to be answered: "Why have you chosen this girl?" "Why do you, Maleena, choose these two to be your parents?" "Does the rest of the family...and all of the other children, agree with this decision?" I did not know that children over the age of 18 could still be adopted (Maleena is 22), but have now learned differently. After the legalities were accomplished we attended a "Birthday party" at the family's home. Maleena is very happy to have a family she can call her own, and for the first time in her life she feels completely loved and accepted.
