Crocodile on the Sandbank

Talk about a fun story! After reading great reviews about these books, I decided to start this mystery series following the adventures of Amelia Peabody, and was delighted with the story from page one. I liked the language (you might need a dictionary for some of the "fancy words"), the characters (so colorful and well developed!), the settings, (makes me want to camp out in Egypt??), and I even found myself giggling through parts of the book. I haven't read a "mystery" in forever, and I thoroughly enjoyed the change of pace. I have already checked out the next book in the series and will probably start it today. The following synopsis was taken from another website, since I didn't want to write it myself. :)

Elizabeth Peters's unforgettable heroine Amelia Peabody makes her first appearance in this clever mystery. Amelia receives a rather large inheritance and decides to use it for travel. On her way through Rome to Egypt, she meets Evelyn Barton-Forbes, a young woman abandoned by her lover and left with no means of support. Amelia promptly takes Evelyn under her wing, insisting that the young lady accompany her to Egypt, where Amelia plans to indulge her passion for Egyptology. When Evelyn becomes the target of an aborted kidnapping and the focus of a series of suspicious accidents and mysterious visitations, Amelia becomes convinced of a plot to harm her young friend. Like any self-respecting sleuth, Amelia sets out to discover who is behind it all.

Oh, fun. I have a whole set of Elizabeth Peters mysteries that I enjoyed reading years ago, and I go back and re-read them every so often. The "sleuth" in my set is a monk in medieval times named Brother Cadfael. He is slightly irreverent and often helps younger characters--often a romance--to solve a problem and become absolved from blame for a local murder.

Wonder what you'll be reading at Sparks Lake...
