Geocaching for Beginners

What do you do with a new handheld GPS? Learn about Geocaching! Here's how we went about it:

1. Read the GPS instruction book and get thoroughly confused with the many functions. Ask the nice son-in-law for technical help.

2. Sign up on a national geocaching website to find out how to locate the caches. Ask the nice son-in-law for help again since it is rather tricky to download the coordinates onto the GPS the first time.

3. Bundle up and go out into the neighborhood for a treasure hunt!

4. Follow the GPS readings for a nice tromp into the woods nearby, and Hooray! We found our very first cache: a clever little wooden potty with an enclosed container that included a log book and little trinkets that other seekers have left behind to share. Be sure to sign the log!

5. Download more local coordinates and go out hunting again. It really helps to take along the nice, patient son-in-law who has been geocaching before because he is very good at spotting the tiny little hidden caches.

6. Congratulations! A new hobby has begun. (We found 5 today!)

That's amazing, that Ken needed instructions on how to find something in the woods. Hooray for wonderful sons-in-law! (Good think he didn't need any GPS coordinates to find you that time at Wasco Lake!)
